About the Award​

Under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani Amir of Qatar,
The Qatar Development Bank (QDB) is launching its second edition of “ROWAD Qatar Award”, which aims to promote the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in SMEs which are categorized in
Five (5) award categories.​

Categories of prizes for the year 2019

​Award CategoryDescription
Best Micro Business Successfully operating for more than 2 years with a growth vision, with a properly defined business plan and a proof of financial performance for at least one year.
Best SME Business Operating for more than 3 years with a strong growth plan with a properly defined business plan and a proof of financial performance for at least two years. Demonstrates innovative approach in identifying methods related to identifying target segment or product development and production.
Best Exporting SME Successfully exported product (s) for the last 2 years, and shown ability to scale up through market penetration in international markets.
Self Sufficiency Award SME with significant contributions to Qatar’s Self-Sufficiency. Satisfying market needs by minimizing reliance on imported products.
Innovation Award Business that provide unique innovative products and services that created solutions to enhance economic, social, or technological needs.

Eligibility criteria

  • ​Applicant must be a Qatari Nationality.
  • Proof of company financial performance across all categories (refer to category requirements)
  • Proven track record in following innovative approach in identifying methods related to identifying target segment or product development and production.
  • Submissions should be in line with the national SME definition.

Winners of the Rowad 2017 awards are not eligible to apply for this year’s edition of the award.​​

Evaluation Criteria

1.Entrepreneurial Spirit
  • Promoter’s vision and commitment to commercialization.
  • Commitment resorted to pursuing entrepreneurship despite privileges of job security.
  • Ability to overcome any entrepreneurial challenges as founder.
  • Demonstration of successful entrepreneurial traits. (E.g. passion, strong work ethics, strong people skills ...etc.)
2.Innovation
  • Demonstrates innovative approach in identifying methods related to identifying target segment and product development /production.
  • Implementing new technology.
  • Degree of automation in production and manufacturing systems for SMEs, the ability to overcome challenges and implement innovative ways of conducting business.
  • Encourages culture of innovation within the team.
3.Financial Health
  • Strength of the organization’s financial performance through profitability.
  • Ability to raise capital.
  • For SMEs, ability for growth through re-investment of capital or profit generated.
4.Sustainability
  • Reliance on local resources related to operations and production management (Human resources, raw materials, etc.).
  • % of Qataris in the executive team.
​5.Growth potential
  • Ability to scale up through market penetration and production/delivery.
  • Clear vision/plan on achievable expansion strategies.
  • Ability to introduce/ adapt products /or modify current product offerings to meet market needs.

The applicants must upload the following:

  • A copy of Applicant ID
  • A copy of business partner(s) ID, if any
  • A copy of commercial Registration CR or Homebased Business License (for Micro Businesses)
  • A copy of 2018 financial statement 2018 (Mandatory field for all applicants except applicants for Innovation Award and Best Micro Business)
  • Business growth plan, if existed
  • For Innovation Award, applicant must submit a proof of their product/service impact and uniqueness
  • ​​Other documents that might support the applicant’s application (e.g. proof of exporting, intellectual property registrations. etc.
